Rockhounding Regulations

General Rules

  • Collecting allowed in White Mountain National Forest with hand tools
  • Most pegmatite quarries are privately owned
  • Many quarries open for fee collecting
  • Non-commercial, personal use only on federal lands
  • Must not greatly disturb the area

Permits & Licenses

  • State Parks require special permission for any collecting
  • National Forest doesn't require permits for personal use
  • Private quarries charge admission fees
  • Commercial collecting requires permits

Restrictions

  • Taking samples in Maine State Parks prohibited without permission
  • National Parks prohibit all collecting
  • Many productive sites are on private property
  • Respect private property boundaries
