Rockhounding Regulations

General Rules

  • • BLM lands: 25 pounds per day plus one piece, 250 pounds per year limit
  • • State Trust Lands: 25 pounds per day, 250 pounds per year with permit
  • • Hand tools only
  • • Surface disturbance must be negligible
  • • Personal use only

Permits & Licenses

  • • No permits for casual collecting on BLM lands
  • • State Trust Lands require annual rockhounding permit (fee required)
  • • Commercial collectors need mineral lease or materials permit

Restrictions

  • • Prohibited in National Parks
  • • No collecting in state parks or sovereign lands
  • • Wilderness areas limited to surface collection
  • • Cannot collect where active mining operations exist without permission
