Rockhounding Regulations

General Rules

  • BLM lands: Nearly all 18 million acres open for rockhounding
  • Limited amounts for non-commercial purposes without charge
  • Hand tools allowed
  • State Trust Lands available with proper permissions

Permits & Licenses

  • No permits for casual collecting on BLM lands
  • State Trust Lands may require access permit
  • Commercial collecting requires permits

Restrictions

  • State Parks prohibit destroying or removing geological features
  • Prohibited in National Parks
  • Wilderness areas have restrictions
  • Some areas may have seasonal closures
