What is Iron Ore?

Iron ore is a rock from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. The principal iron ore minerals are hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4). Iron ores are typically found in banded iron formations (BIFs), which are sedimentary rocks composed of alternating layers of iron oxides and silica. The formation of iron ore deposits is often associated with ancient geological processes, including the oxidation of iron in seawater and subsequent precipitation. Iron ore is a crucial raw material for the production of steel, which is used in a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, and transportation.
