Color depth and the red flash
The grade ladder runs pale lilac → medium purple → deep 'Siberian' purple showing red and blue flashes under incandescent light. That top grade — a trade term now, not a Russian origin claim — brings the only real premiums amethyst pays.
Zoning and evenness
Visible color banding face-up knocks stones down a tier. Cutters orient rough to hide zoning in the pavilion; face-up evenness is what you're paying for.
Clarity
Eye-clean is the standard and the supply supports it — included amethyst is bead material. Only attractive phantom or 'fingerprint' features get a pass in collector circles.
Natural vs synthetic
Lab amethyst is abundant and nearly undetectable, which caps natural prices. It matters most in large flawless deep-purple stones sold cheap — assume synthetic without disclosure at that combination.
