What is Orpiment?

Orpiment is a fairly rare mineral that usually bears a striking golden or yellow-orange hue. Historically, this arsenic-containing mineral was used until the 19th century when it was replaced by less-toxic options. Specimens of orpiment with large, striking crystals may be sought out by collectors. The mineral is also used today in the production of semiconductors and photoconductors.

Etymology & Origins

Orpiment takes its name from the Latin auripigmentum (aurum, "gold" + pigmentum, "pigment") because of its deep-yellow color.

Uses & Applications

Orpiment has a myriad of historical uses, ranging from poison to pigment. Today it is still a major source of arsenic, and it is also used to manufacture oil cloth. Orpiment is also commonly used to create semiconductors and photoconductors.

Healing Properties

Orpiment is believed to stimulate the mind and allow one to become more attuned to their own personal desires. When used on the solar plexus chakra, it is said to increase people's energy levels, allowing them to focus on the things most important to them while promoting a clearer perception of the people and circumstances in their daily life. Because of possible toxins associated with this stone, handwashing is recommended after handling.
