Opal pricing depends on three things no other gem is judged by: body tone (white through black), brightness of play-of-color, and pattern. A dull white opal might bring $10 per carat while a bright black opal with broad rolling color from Lightning Ridge tops $10,000. Solid stones, doublets, and triplets are different markets entirely — always confirm what you're holding first.

What Drives Opal Value
The factors dealers actually price on — and how each one moves the per-carat number.
Body tone (N1–N9)
The darker the body, the more the color pops and the higher the price. True black opal (N1–N4) from Lightning Ridge anchors the top of the market; white opal (N7–N9) is the entry tier; boulder and crystal opal sit between.
Brightness
Graded 1–5, and arguably the strongest single multiplier: a 'brilliant' (B5) stone can be worth ten times a 'dull' stone of identical tone and pattern.
Pattern
Broad rolling flash, harlequin, and named patterns command collector premiums; pinfire and small-scale patterns are the commodity end. Red dominant color beats green, which beats blue.
Solid vs assembled
Doublets and triplets use a paper-thin opal layer and are priced accordingly — a $50 triplet can wear the face of a $2,000 solid black opal. Check the side profile before believing any price.
Origin and stability
Australian fields (Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy, Queensland boulder) carry the trust premium. Ethiopian hydrophane is beautiful but absorbs water and can craze, so it trades 50–80% below Australian equivalents.
