The imperial definition
Strictly, imperial topaz shows orange with red/pink overtones — stones that show pink or red flashes at the ends command the top prices. Pure yellow-brown 'golden' topaz trades a tier below true imperial.
Origin
Ouro Preto, Brazil is the historic and ongoing source of imperial material; Pakistani pink topaz (Katlang) is the other pedigree. For blue topaz, origin is irrelevant — treatment plants set the price.
Size and saturation
Imperial topaz saturates with size and rough is scarce above 5 carats, so per-carat prices climb steeply. Blue topaz is the opposite: huge clean stones are routine and per-carat prices stay flat.
Fading risk in browns
Some sherry-brown topaz fades with prolonged sunlight. Stable imperial colors carry confidence premiums; known-fading material from certain deposits trades discounted in the trade.
